Latte Art: More Beauty and Creativity in Your Cup!

Consciencia Cafe

The decoration on espresso with milk is known as latte art. It originated with Italians in the 19th century, with credit attributed to Piero Merlo for its invention and Luigi Lupi for its dissemination. The technique gained worldwide popularity through David Schomer, an American barista who spread it in Seattle during the 1980s.

Latte Art Methods

Free Pour

Designs made exclusively with a pitcher (small milk jug), creating patterns through movement during pouring.

Etching

Also called sketching, this uses toothpicks or a steel pen with milk, syrups, caramel, and chocolate to create detailed designs.

Stencil Art

The use of decorated molds with cocoa or cinnamon powder to create precise shapes.

3D and 2D Latte Art

A Japanese technique that creates small sculptures with milk foam, forming three-dimensional figures.

How to Make Latte Art

Essential Tools

  • Pitcher (milk jug with a spout)
  • Large cup
  • Steamed whole milk
  • Espresso machine

Step by Step

  1. Prepare espresso and fill 1/3 of the cup
  2. Steam milk until it reaches a creamy consistency
  3. Position the pitcher about 4 finger-widths away
  4. Pour milk in a slow circular motion
  5. Bring the pitcher closer when reaching the halfway point of the cup
  6. Practice simple designs (hearts, flowers) before advancing

Practice is essential to developing this artistic skill.
